Disco isn’t dead, sadly March 2, 2006
So, on my way into work yesterday I heard a Bee Gees song, and I realized I don’t have enough Bee Gees in my life right now. I’m open to suggestions as to what should be my Bee Gees theme song should be. (But it can’t be Stayin’ Alive - be creative!)
The rest of my day was tedious. An hour at the dentist to get a root canal filled, then two hours at Canadian Tire to get my car fixed. I brought my Sockapaloooza sock with me, and ended up having to frog the whole damn thing when I realized I’d messed up big time. Argh.
While I do not claim to be an expert, I did live with a BeeGees fanatic for 3 years in university and have had some exposure.
I can highly recommend “Tragedy” as a most awesome some because you can really scream “Tragedy!” at the appropriate moments (there are many in my own day). For a non-disco era BeeGees recommendation, try “You Win Again” which I quite love.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I don’t hate the Bee Gees. I never have and never will buy any of their music, but from time to time when I do hear one of their songs (not that “Tragedy” one, though), I can kinda dig the groove. Kinda — as opposed to loathing every minute of it like I would with say, Abba, or anything on popular radio today. I can’t remember which of their big hits I’m thinking of, but if you listen to session musicians on some of those recordings, especially the bass player, those guys are good. The brothers Gibb might sing like a bunch of 10-year-olds, but they have a good back-up band. Or had.
I feel dirty now.
Marylynn - there was a period where I was seriously obsessed with “You Win Again”, but I haven’t heard it in years. It may be time to revist it.
Phillip - we all have our secret musical weaknesses. Embrace them!
Phillip I thought it was you that had my Bay City Rollers album?
