I wish The Cranberries would shut up already September 18, 2006
I did a stupid thing yesterday, despite taking every possible precaution to prevent what happened last night from happening.
I watched a scary movie, 28 Days Later. It was the middle of the day, the sun was shining, and I had all the blinds and windows open. I could see the kids playing across the street, riding their bikes around, and laughing and having fun. I planned to watch other non-scary movies after it to lessen the impact, but to no avail.
The movie was good. It was really good - I’d consider watching it again sometime. The most graphic thing about it was when the Infected* vomited blood (note to my mother and sisters: don’t watch this movie. One word: ew.) Other than that, I was okay with the ending, and liked the alternate endings, especially the radical alternative ending.
The problem began around 11, when I started getting ready for bed. There was thunder and lightening, and when that passed, it was very quiet in the neighbourhood. I’m not used to that kind of silence; in my apartment, I was on a busy four-lane road, near an ambulance and fire dispatch centre, and above a bar, so there was always a lot of noise, even early in the morning. Here, in a residential area, it’s oh so quiet - too quiet. I lay there with my eyes wide opening, knowing that it was just a stupid movie, but unable to shake the fear that someone was going to come bursting through the bedroom door. Nightmares would have been a relief because it would have meant I slept.
I did drop off eventually, and snapped awake a couple of times. Around 4am, crazy singing dude with headphones** wandered by, and it was oddly reassuring. If CSDWH can wander around the city unassaulted by violently ill people intent on killing, then surely all must be well.
* They weren’t really zombies, were they? More like plague victims.
** Crazy singing dude with headphones is this youngish guy who wanders around wearing these huge headphones, carrying a discman, and singing along at the top of his lungs, usually off key. I think he’s harmless - he doesn’t seem to be headed anywhere specific, but he always looks like he’s headed somewhere with a purpose.
LOL - I am SO with you, girl! I’ve seen 28 Days Later and it’s very good but yeah, I could see how it could be very unnerving, especially in new, unfamiliar digs.
Just don’t do anything else foolish, like watch a number of Japanese horror films immediately before moving to Japan. Don’t, because then you might spend your first few nights in your new apartment trying not to stare at the sliding door between the living room and kitchen, trying not to imagine it starting to slide open and little fingers appearing around the edge. Just don’t do it.
Actually, don’t even think about thinking about it, or post a comment on someone else’s blog about it, or… damn. Now I’m not going to sleep tonight
I recommend a big mug of hot Ovaltine at bedtime (Milo for Julie), use skim milk and add a generous slug of rum, or your liquor/liqueur of choice. My favourite is Amaretto … mmm… zzz zzz…
Oh ya, 28 Days Later totally rocked. Didn’t keep me up or give me nightmares, but Japanese horror movies do. Never, ever watch Japanese horror movies. Japanese slasher flicks, on the other hand… I highly recommend Battle Royale… it’s about a bunch of school kids who have to fight to the death…. good times.
Ovaltine - haven’t had that in years! My hot-drink-at-bedtime-when-I-can’t-sleep of choice is usually Neocitron, but I could easily make the change back to Ovaltine. Does it work with soy milk?
Japanese horror films - hmmm… what are some good titles? I should get them for the library (*evil grin*)
Freakishly tasty with soy milk. Sooooo good. Now, Japanese milk, on the other hand: just freaky.
And, um, maybe I’ll look into these Japanese slasher flicks. Hell, why not?
Shaun of the dead remains my favorite zombie movie..in particular the ending..I have yet to mention this to phillip but rebecca last night i picked up “hard candy” it was great…yeah obviously gender issues may have accounted for the increased unease but good film…
oh yeah i was up your way…well kinda..closer…last week did a ride around lake superiour…actuallly…yeah you moved..i was nowhere near you ….I think i need a geography lesson..i was north of owen sound…
28 Days Later didn’t scare me as bad as I thought, but I think the nerd in my was up in arms over the whole fast-moving zombies thing.
The Ring, though. Jesus H! I actually hid behind a pillow for the last ten minutes, which I haven’t done in a long time. Actually, I’d never done that before.
You thought you wanted quiet
You thought you could apply it
But now that you have tried it…
You’re sick and tired of quiet!

Naturally, Animaniacs would have a song for just such an occasion. Thanks Pender!
And the library is soooo getting a copy of the original Ring. Heh heh heh.
