Gearing up for NaNo 2006 October 25, 2006

Filed under: 2006, NaNoWriMo — Rebecca @ 10:48 am

While emptying a box on the weekend, I came across the notebook I’ve used in past years to record draft blog posts, short story ideas, plot ideas for previous NaNoWriMo attempts, and. . . poetry (*shudder*). It was interesting to see how I had planned for my story to continue once I picked it up again, and how cringe-worthy some of the ideas were. At this point, I’m torn between being curious to re-read what I wrote last year, and wanting to die of embarassment about what I wrote last year. Soon, either way, I’m going to have to reread it to remember (at the very least) what the character’s names are.

The other reason I was glad I found the book was because Giselle had sent me a link to the Snowflake Method of novel writing, and it’s a good resource for getting started. There are ten steps, starting with writing a one-sentence summary of the story, right up to editing the first draft. So I sat down last night and spent a good 45 minutes on the first step. It’s harder than you might think, really. At the end of that time, the page was littered with attempts that went one of three ways:

  • “Blah blah blah… death!
  • “Blah blah secret blah blah kill for!
  • The crew blah blah live long enough to tell?

Who do I think I am? Bloody John Grisham? Robert Ludlum? I just have to keep at it until I get it down, and then move on to step two, which is writing a paragraph summarizing the story. Only, the thing that hit me last night was that I know there’s going to be some big huge secret, I just don’t know what it is. And since it’s (apparently) worth killing for and (apparently) important enough that people are willing to die for it, it’s gotta be a good one. I think maybe last year, I decided it was a weapon, but I don’t think it is anymore. Some other possibilities that have occured to me:

  • the secret of how they get the caramel into a Caramilk bar;
  • incriminating photos from last year’s Christmas party;
  • the glowing contents of Marcellus Wallace’s briefcase*;
  • The Kee to Bala**;
  • a Shakespearian manuscript written by an infinite number of monkeys.

However, I’m open to suggestions.

*Gratuitous Pulp Fiction reference.

**The name of a famous bar in the village of Bala. Maybe it only sounds funny to me. But wouldn’t it be a cool name for a secret weapon?

Last weekend, my dad and grandfather came up to do some handyman work around the place, which included installing a ceiling fan in the living room. It was the most stressed out I’ve been in a long time, watching my 78-year-old grandfather with vision issues and my father who’s slowly recovering from knee surgury stand on a 6″ wide beam while trying to hang this somewhat heavy fan. But it’s done, with minimal swearing and consumption of rum.

Welcome! October 13, 2006

Filed under: All About Moi, Blog, Geek — Rebecca @ 10:00 pm

Hello! Hey there! Welcome! It’s my new blog, same as the old one, really! Except it’s shiny and has that new-blog smell to it, don’t you think?

It’s not like moving everything over here was a long, pre-meditated process, where I went from liking Blogger to loathing it, to deciding to set up a new blog, then doing everything involved, and then doing a big unveiling. It started with an email from Jody asking if I was interested in joining his merry band of bloggers in sharing server space, and me saying, “Hey, why not?”, then Jody saying “well, you can move your blog over here too, and oh, by the way, I’ve set up WordPress for you to use,” and me saying, “Cool - thanks!”

Then there was a whole lot of back and forth about how to register domains, ftp stuff, set up WP stuff, tweak the template code, get the RSS feed working, and so on.

But! Here it is! It’s still a work in progress, but so was the other one (just because nothing obvious changed on a regular basis, doesn’t mean it wasn’t happening!)

(Many many thanks to Jody for all his patient help. Muchly appreciated.)

So, what’s the weather like out there? October 12, 2006

Filed under: Home — Rebecca @ 10:49 pm

Oh, it’s been snowing a little.

So, what's the weather like where you are?

Three hours later...

What did I do with my scraper?

My neighbour just turned on his Christmas lights. I though to myself, “Awww, I should do that…. WAIT! It’s not even Halloween yet! Sheesh!”

And Alice Cooper is playing at the arena about five bloocks from here. I’m not suggesting these events are somehow related. But it is awfully coincidental.

Test October 10, 2006

Filed under: Blog — Rebecca @ 4:29 pm

This is just a test! Don’t worry - you don’t need to study for it, so no need to feel all shaky and scared that you’re going to fail. Because even if you do, there aren’t any consequences.

Carry on!

Doing something or doing something else October 9, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — Rebecca @ 4:30 pm

So far today, I’ve accomplished quite a bit, but not really what I wanted to do. I’ve made muffins, cleaned the kitchen, watched a movie (”The Magnificent Butcher“), written 8 reviews over there, and had lunch. Part of me wants to continue playing around online because I’m sort of in a groove, and I don’t like interrupting it to go do something else.

The something else is watching the five videos I borrowed from the library and are now overdue. It’s likely that I’ll be getting an overdue notice for them sometime this week, which seems silly in light of the fact the librarian who does the overdues could just come downstairs and kick me in the shins until I promised to bring the movies back. Plus, I’m so closed to being finished this mitten it seems ridiculous not to finish it this afternoon so I can move onto something else.

Octoberrific!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Rebecca @ 12:28 pm

So sorry for the lack of posts lately. Usually when I get home for work, I have three brain cells left - one for hunger, one for watching TV, and one for napping. Sometimes they gang up on each other and beat the other into submission, so I don’t have much brain power left over. The job is amazing, and I’m still loving it, but it’s still taking all of my mental energy during the day.

And also, for the first time in almost three years, I have a cold. It sucks. All the natural immunity I built up working in a public library over the years has obviously worn off, so now I have to build it back up again.

Thanksgiving was a pretty subdued affair, as my parents came up for the night. Instead of a turkey, we had a nice little chicken and some pumpkin cheesecake. Yum!

Other than that, it’s been pretty quiet here.
